“I truly believe that there is nothing more special than receiving something handmade with love, care and intention”
A little bit about me
I’m Nonie (like no-nee) the owner and creator at Blossomink studio; a calligraphy, art and design studio based in Gorey, County Wexford. First thing you need to know about me is that I am an artist first, specialising in drawings, calligraphy and mural art. I have been obsessed with drawing since I was about 1 years old; my dad proudly tells anyone that will listen that when I first picked up a pencil I held it correctly and rarely put it down thereafter. I started this business to share my passion for art and design by combining my skills to offer clients a variety of bespoke services: calligraphy and stationery for wedding and events, mural art, bespoke art commissions and rustic designs. I truly believe that there is nothing more special than receiving something handmade with love, care and intention.
My background
I studied graphic design in NCAD, Dublin, where I earned a B.Des Visual Communications. This course focused on problem solving using image and text in personal, cultural and commercial settings. I learned about typography, layout, photography, traditional printing techniques such as letterpress and relief printing, how to transform my hand drawn art and lettering into digital illustrations and designs, and how to apply them in a fictional way.
Calligraphy became a part of my life in my final year of college and I fell head over heels in love with the art form. The slow, meditative process with precise movements and pressure, and the endless amount of intricate scripts to learn - it spoke to my perfectionist side. My first professional client was back in 2016, a corporate PR company working in association with Diageo. I had to work on-site under tight deadlines to create beautiful and accurate calligraphy that represented the client's brand and messaging, a job that stuck with me and taught me many valuable skills. That was seven years ago and I’m still hooked!
My inspiration
Based in the “Sunny South East” of Ireland, I’m surrounded by beautiful, rich countryside and beaches which influence much of my work. I love experimenting with different styles and my inspiration varies massively from big, bold and bright like Wexford sunsets, to the delicate, minimal and muted colours seen on beaches nearby. You’ll often find me taking photos in peculiar places of seemingly mundane things - mostly examining form in plants, colours and textures.
My ethos
I am committed to using quality materials and processes to create slow and considered pieces or art and design that have no place in our throw away culture but are intended to be kept and cherished for years to come. My goal is to continue using traditional practices to merge art (work to be appreciated primarily for its beauty or emotional power) with design (combining words, shapes, form, and colour to communicate an idea or solve a problem), making art more accessible and widely appreciated by the general public. I make this happen by creating artistically designed stationery for all of life’s important dates: weddings, baby showers, house warming, baby naming ceremony, wedding anniversaries, milestone birthdays, engagement parties, or any other even that deserve more than a few photos on your phone. and events, wedding and event calligraphy, commissioned calligraphy art, illustrated logos and hand lettered logos, murals for businesses and private clients, art prints and through teaching about my practices.
